How Ghanaian Way Became a
Landmark in Newark, New Jersey

In a proud moment for the Ghanaian community in the United States, Victoria Street in Newark, New Jersey was officially renamed Ghanaian Way, creating a lasting symbol of culture, unity, and recognition.

This historic event took place on Saturday, June 24, 2011, when community leaders, public officials, residents, and supporters gathered in Newark to celebrate the unveiling of Ghanaian Way—a street that represents the strength and growing presence of Ghanaians in America.

Today, Ghanaian Way African Market proudly carries that legacy forward, serving customers across Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, and surrounding New Jersey communities.

The renaming of Victoria Street to Ghanaian Way was inspired by a memorable community celebration during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

When Ghana national football team defeated United States men’s national soccer team, Ghanaian fans gathered outside Dream African Market in Newark to celebrate the victory.

The celebration became so energetic that police officers reportedly believed there was unrest taking place. Community members contacted local Councilman Ras Baraka, who responded by supporting the celebration and arranging for the road to be closed so fans could safely continue celebrating.

After witnessing the pride, joy, and unity of the Ghanaian community, the idea was born to rename the street Ghanaian Way.
